Let’s get one thing clear from the outset. I’m not good at wit. Ask me to think of a pun and I’ll get back to you in a day or two, if you’re lucky.
So finding a good name for my blog was a struggle.
Ultimately I decided on “red or green pen?” because I feel like it sums up my struggle in finding my identity as a new teacher. The debate about whether red pen is demotivating is at least a decade old – I remember hearing about it when I was at school – and is rather tiresome and uninteresting. But I do think it fairly neatly shows the differences between the “traditionalists” and the “progressives” in education.
More recent examples of the same phenomenon abound – the role of iPads, detentions, lesson objectives, and SOLO are just a few examples I can remember being debated on twitter this past week or two. I’ve found myself flip flopping between the two sides of many of the discussions.
I can’t wait to get stuck into Summer Institute, and, more importantly, my school to settle my opinion on all these things.
Come along for the ride. I promise I’ll give you a few entertaining behaviour anecdotes in return.
